Book trucks, classic cars + a juicy farmers' market secret

Hey, neighbor,

It’s a strange little piece of advice, but one that’s quietly changed the way I move through my days: Look closer.

Not do more. Not go somewhere new. Just… notice what’s already there.

Because life here in Torrance? It’s full.

The familiar faces, the small moments, the places you pass a hundred times before finally stepping inside…

And when you start paying attention, something shifts.

Your routine feels less routine. Your neighborhood starts to feel like yours.

That’s the whole idea behind The Tide.

Not more noise—just a better way to see what’s already good.

Here’s what’s worth noticing this week →

In this issue:

🌊 A book truck, a coffee run, and a “meet cute” kind of weekend you didn’t know you needed
🌊 The lineup: garden workshops, classic cars, live improv, and a few very good reasons to get out of the house
🌊 The story behind why our farmers' market just hits different (hint: it’s not just the produce)

🎉 Simply subscribe to The Tide and you’ll be entered into our launch party giveaway! Win a $50 gift card to one of our favorite spots (have a go-to? Hit reply and let us know!).

Meet Joyce Chan, Torrance Farmers’ Market Manager

If you’ve ever wandered through the Torrance Certified Farmers' Market and thought, this feels different, you’re not imagining it.

For Joyce Chan, that difference is everything.

“What makes us special is that we cater directly to families,” she said. While some markets lean heavily toward restaurant sales, Torrance’s is rooted in weekly regulars — parents with strollers, grandparents with canvas bags, home cooks gathering ingredients for dishes that span cultures and generations.

On any given Saturday, up to 2,500 people pass through. They come for cherries in late spring (a fleeting, one-month season), for snap peas and artichokes, for the first stone fruit of summer. But they stay for the conversations, and come back on Tuesdays.

Joyce didn’t start here. She began as a bookkeeper for Food Access LA, helped open the Atwater Village market, and eventually landed in Torrance. “My very first day, it felt like home,” she said. The diversity and family energy reminded her of growing up in Silver Lake.

She’s passionate about what sets farmers' markets apart: produce picked the night before. “When a peach stays on the branch longer, the sugar has time to develop,” she said. “That’s why it tastes so juicy.” Behind every stand is a farmer who planted, harvested, and hauled that fruit themselves.

During COVID, the market expanded to allow spacing — and it never shrank back. Today, it supports small food businesses that sometimes grow into brick-and-mortar shops down the street.

And twice a week, Joyce is there — greeting vendors, spotlighting seasonal finds and helping a community gather around food that’s as fresh as it gets.

Next Week: Meet Rosita Oey, North High teacher who started a course teaching practical financial skills.

🎖️ Armed Forces Day returns
Torrance’s 64th annual Armed Forces Day celebration is back May 15-17, honoring the United States Marine Corps and marking 250 years of American history. It’s the largest parade of its kind in the country, with a full weekend lineup including a parade, 5K, and an expanded exhibit (plus a new shuttle from the Transit Center to the City Yard). Even with limited military participation this year due to global deployments, the city is moving forward with a meaningful, community-wide tribute — worth marking your calendar now.

🏓 Pickleball courts coming soon
Construction is underway at Wilson Park for eight new dedicated pickleball courts. The upgraded space — complete with lighting — aims to be ready for play by June.

🧠 May is Mental Health Awareness Month
The City of Torrance has officially proclaimed May as Mental Health Awareness Month, encouraging open conversations and support across the community. It’s a reminder that mental well-being matters — and that resources, connection, and compassion go a long way.

🇺🇸 Honoring Torrance’s Hometown Heroes
The City of Torrance is spotlighting local service members through its Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program, with banners displayed along city streets in their honor. Each banner recognizes a Torrance-connected veteran or active-duty member—bringing their stories into the everyday rhythm of the community. Meet Torrance’s 2026 Hometown Heroes.

✈️ A field trip with serious lift
Thirty-two students from Torrance High and South High recently got a behind-the-scenes look at FlightWave Aerospace — one of the fastest-growing drone companies in the region, right here in Torrance. The visit, hosted by the South Bay Workforce Investment Board, put future engineers on the floor of a live operation: prototype builds, flight testing, the whole thing. FlightWave has grown so fast it outgrew a three-year lease in seven months and quadrupled its workforce since landing in the city. These kids didn't just hear about aerospace careers — they walked through one. Now that's a field trip.
