Hey, neighbor!
This week feels a little like a collective exhale.
The ballots are cast. Graduation caps are being decorated. Summer concerts are filling the calendar. Across Torrance, the signs of a new season are everywhere.
Whether you're celebrating a graduate, mapping out your summer bucket list, or simply looking forward to longer evenings and a slower pace, consider this your weekly reminder to enjoy the season as it arrives.
In this issue:
🌊 The woman helping bring concerts, theater, art, and a little more magic to Torrance 🌊 Beatles in the park, anime festivals + the weekend summer officially arrives 🌊 Graduation season, summer reading, and a few small reminders not to rush this chapter
🎉 Congratulations to the North Torrance Saxons baseball team, who just captured the CIF-SS Division 7 championship with a 7-1 victory over South El Monte. The win marks the program’s first CIF title since 1974.
People you'd want to wave to.
Meet Monica Harte, Torrance Cultural Services Manager
If you’ve ever found yourself at a summer concert in the park, wandered through a gallery at the Torrance Art Museum, or caught a musical at the James R. Armstrong Theatre, you’ve experienced a piece of Monica Harte’s work — whether you realized it or not.
As the Cultural Services Manager for the City of Torrance, Monica oversees a surprisingly wide world: the museum, the theater company, the newly launched City Academy of the Arts, and signature events like Torrance Summer Nights and the Cherry Blossom Festival.
It’s a big job. But for Monica, it’s also a lifelong calling.
“I’ve spent my whole life in the arts,” she said — from producing operas in New York to creating performances for critically ill children.
Now, that experience shows up in a different way: making the arts accessible to everyone in Torrance.
That might look like free concerts drawing thousands of people to the park on a Saturday night. Or a museum exhibition that welcomes visitors from across the region — always free to enter. Or an arts academy that loans instruments to kids who otherwise couldn’t afford them, or makes sure a young dancer has the ballet shoes she needs to stay in class.
Because to Monica, the arts aren’t extra.
“They make life better,” she said.
After years in New York, what stands out most about Torrance is something simpler: connection. A city big enough to hold it all — but small enough to know the people showing up.
“You really, actually can get to know the people,” Monica said. “I enjoy knowing the people — the actual people, not just the audience base.”
Next week, meet Paul Krumpe — World Cup player, Olympian, and the Torrance coach who has spent three decades helping local kids fall in love with the game.
Know someone quietly making Torrance better? Submit an idea here. Those are our favorite stories to tell.
If there’s an unofficial first day of summer in Torrance, this might be it.
The city’s beloved Summer Nights concert series returns to Wilson Park this Saturday, kicking off a season of free outdoor concerts, movie nights, and community gatherings that will run through September. Opening the series is Britain’s Finest, a Beatles tribute band known for recreating the sound, look, and energy of the Fab Four.
Expect lawn chairs, picnic blankets, kids dancing near the stage, and neighbors running into neighbors. In other words: a very Torrance evening.
Pack a picnic, grab your favorite people, and settle in for a summer tradition that feels a little like a hometown reunion every year.
